Support group assist people with mental illnesses

Norwalk Reflector - 2/22/2019

Feb. 22-- Feb. 22--Members of the local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) support group said they hope they can help local residents.

All are welcome to join the next support group meeting, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.March 11 at the Enrichment Centers for Huron County, 130 Shady Lane. For more information, call 419-668-6651.

The NAMI mission is to assist those people living with mental illnesses, along with their family and friends.

One in four families copes with mental illness, according to the NAMI Huron County brochure.

"These individuals come from all walks of life. Often these people and their loved ones have one thing in common: a feeling of isolation and the stigma attached to a biological illness that many do not understand. Mental illness is a biological brain disorder that results in a disruption in the brain's ability to send electrical impulses and guide the distribution of hormones that govern healthy brain function. Like diabetes, the right chemicals are not produced and absorbed in the intended manner. It is chronic, but treatable and manageable," according to the brochure.
