Documentary screening looks to give insight on veterans' struggle

Meridian Star - 4/2/2024

Apr. 2—The Stronger Together Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at reducing the number of military service members who commit suicide, is inviting the public to a free viewing of a documentary that gives insight into the struggle veterans face reintegrating into society.

"Tribal," gives viewers an intimate look into the lives of three combat veterans as they talk about their experiences, emotions and struggles both on the battlefield and back at home. The documentary was made by Army veteran Mark Kershaw who enlisted the help of other veterans from the War on Terror to give viewers an authentic glimpse into the mental health issues plaguing America's veterans.

Kershaw, who was discharged in 2013, told the Military Times in October 2023 that roughly one member of his unit dies by suicide each year.

With "Tribal," he said, he resisted calls to end the film on a high note as many other films do because that isn't the reality veterans are experiencing. By sharing his story and the stories of three other combat veterans in a true, unvarnished way, the goal of the film is to spark conversations that can prevent other service members from taking their own lives.

Mike Couch, president of the Stronger Together Foundation, said the film is extremely powerful and he hopes residents take advantage of the opportunity to see it.

"This is a very, very rich documentary," he said. "It's very worth coming to see."

"Tribal" will be shown beginning at 5 p.m. on May 18 at the McCain Theater at Meridian Community College. There is no cost to see the film, Couch said, and instead residents are encouraged to bring nonperishable foods, clothing and toiletries that will be given to veterans in need.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available for local businesses or individuals interested in helping the Stronger Together Foundation provide the screening of "Tribal" along with its other programs to support local veterans.

Anyone interested in learning more about sponsoring or more information about the film can contact Couch at 601-934-7119 or email info@strongertogetherfoundation.org.
