orangeburg county to honor veterans; ceremony will include ribbon-cutting

Oct. 21--Orangeburg County will honor its veterans on Saturday, Nov. 10 with a parade and a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly built veterans walk near the County Administrative Center.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Russell Street and will head down to the Edisto Memorial Gardens.

The Veterans Walk ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held 2 p.m. at the Orangeburg County Administrative Center at 1437 Amelia Street. The Veterans Walk, which is in the area around the courthouse, was funded through the capital project sales tax.

Retired combat veteran Robin D. Rucker will be the featured speaker.

Rucker currently serves as the 4th Vice Commander of The American Legion Department of South Carolina.

Rucker has been a member of the Legion for the past nine years, holding the positions of post commander, district commander, state membership chairman and state legislature committee chairman.

As a post commander and district commander, he has won numerous awards for membership in the state and nationally.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a sergeant tank commander in the late 1970s and early 1980s before joining the South Carolina National Guard. He served as a flight operations sergeant and officer administrator and police trainer staff sergeant.

Rucker served in Operation Enduring Freedom from 2007 to 2008.

He is also a retired police chief with 27 years of experience with both the Wagener and Abbeville police departments.

He has also served 20 years as a firefighter with Lexington County and the City of Cayce.

He lives in the Sandy Run area with his wife, Christy, and their children.

The Veterans Day program will include prayers, patriotic hymns, as well as a recognition of prisoners of war and those missing in action.

Sponsors of the ceremony include a number of Orangeburg veterans groups as well as the city of Orangeburg.
